New enviro wedding list removes the guilt from over-indulgence

Europe’s largest eco-centre has launched a new wedding list which contains only ‘environmentally-friendly’ gifts designed to enable couples to start the rest of their lives in a positive and responsible way.

The list, launched by the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) at Machynlleth in Wales, contains items such as organic bed linen, recycled glasses, and natural organic paints for the home. For the garden there are gifts such as organic herbs and vegetable seeds, solar powered fountains, and hammocks. The items can be chosen from the CAT’s Buy Green By Mail catalogue, and have all been selected with consideration of their social and environmental impacts, such as the sustainability of the source, and whether they have been made from recycled, recyclable or non-toxic materials.

“We choose products which make it easy for people to enjoy living more sustainable lifestyles,” said Sabrina Wise, Trading Manager at CAT. “People can trust the suggestions we make and any profits are used to further research and demonstrate sustainable lifestyles at CAT.”

Currently, two couples are using the list, a CAT spokesperson told edie. As well as the household items, which are the most popular gifts, other choices include cookery books and more quirky items such as rainbow crystals, she said.

Betrothed couples wishing to make use of the service can compile a personalised list from the catalogue, which can then be sent to their wedding guests. Orders can be placed and paid for by telephone, and will be gift labelled and delivered to the couple in bulk for the big day. Anyone interested in using CAT’s list service should phone 01654 705959, or email mail.order@cat.org.uk.

CAT also recommends its range of residential courses as a romantic weekend getaway, studying anything from sewage to solar power, and further information on these is available from 01654 705981/703743, email courses@cat.org.uk.
