Climate-related financial disclosure: Business best practice in 2020

This one-hour webinar, hosted in association with edie’s upcoming Sustainability Leaders Forum 2020, will explore how businesses are using the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFDs) to align with investor needs and enhance their sustainability strategies.

Launched in December 2015 by Bank of England governor Mark Carney, the TCFD lays out the recommendations for businesses to identify and disclose information sought by investors and other external shareholders to assess the climate-related risks of their operations.

Notably, the recommendations call on companies to include the potential business impacts of different climate scenarios – including the 2C and 1.5C pathways of the Paris Agreement. Green groups have gone as far as to argue that the UK will not meet its 2050 net-zero goal unless all corporates begin to embed the TCFD recommendations within their business strategies.

Almost 800 organisations have expressed support for the recommendations, and include the world’s largest banks, asset managers and pension funds, responsible for assets of $118trn. Yet, best-practice examples of enacting the TCFD recommendations remain scarce. With that in mind, this webinar will hear from sustainability reporting experts and organisations that have actively aligned with the TCFD recommendations, showing you exactly what best practice looks like.

The webinar topic of climate-related financial disclosure is a key focus area for the Sustainability Leaders Forum 2020. Taking place on 4-5 February at the Business Design Centre in London, the Forum is the UK’s only dedicated sustainability event that combines strategic insight with practical outputs for business leaders.

Discussion points:

  • The changing sustainability expectations of investors
  • How businesses can align with the TCFD
  • Making sustainable business a board-level topic

Baishakhi Sengupta

Energy Compliance & Sustainability Manager , Avara Foods

Baishakhi Sengupta started her sustainability career with the Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. She is a sustainability expert with technical experience in sustainability strategy, policy, carbon management, environmental compliance and sustainability reporting (GRI, CDP) across many sectors. Baishakhi’s work on energy management (ISO50001) has recently received recognition from the National Standards Board (BSI) in a national case study. She also introduced the TCFD recommendations to the Exec Board at Avara Foods as there are similarities in the work proposed by TCFD to the sustainability work being undertaken by Avara Foods. So, Avara Foods has been officially listed on the TCFD website since 2018 and it is a great honour as TCFD is pioneering great work on climate resilience mapping in a holistic way.
