Savvy tractor use ‘could cut farming costs’

Irish farmers who are concerned about the rising cost of tractor fuel have been offered hints on how to save money and help the environment by manufacturers, according to the Irish Independent.

A report in the newspaper suggests that drivers should get acquainted with the torque and power characteristics of their vehicle.

It quotes manufacturers who state finding out that kind of information should not prove difficult, despite the fact it is rarely included in tractor-makers literature.

Michael Gillon of Case-IH told the Irish Independent the pillar display on their Magnum, CVX and Steiger models show litres per hour and litres per hectare.

He stated: “Some read-outs give you litres per hour, but that’s a very narrow viewpoint of limited value. Consumption has to be related to work done.”

With this type of information to hand, Mr Gillon claims that farmers can experiment with a variety of driving strategies to achieve the best possible balance between productivity and fuel balance.

Valtra’s EcoPower tractors use engine fuel control software in order to provide two sets of power and torque curves.
