Following on from the news that a coalition group of opponents are looking into taking their case to the European courts in a bid to stop the capital from taking water from the River Shannon, politicians in North Tipperary have now come together in a bid to prevent the same happening to Lough Derg.

At a public meeting on the matter, Labour Senator for Nenagh Alan Kelly concurred with his Sinn Fein counterpart Seamus Morris that plans to “take a huge natural resource from one region and give it to another region” are ill-advised.

“There has been so little research or funding for research into the actual state of the water in the Shannon region,” Councillor Morris told the meeting, according to the Nenagh Guardian.

“We in Sinn Fein are also very concerned about the risk of Dublin City Council handing over control of their water to a private company who potentially could export it to the highest paying customer.”

Meanwhile, the Lough Derg Anglers Association has submitted its own opposition to Dublin City Council, claiming that extracting huge volumes of water would devastate local wildlife and some small businesses.
