UK insurer goes carbon neutral

Insurer Royal & Sun Alliance has announced its UK operations are now carbon neutral. Since 2000 the company has cut its CO2 emissions from 63,000 tonnes to 31,000 tonnes and this week announced it would offset its remaining footprint by purchasing carbon credits through the Carbon Neutral Company.

The offsetting projects are expected to include methane capture in Germany, solar lighting in rural India and wind farms in India and New Zealand.

The move makes the company the first British insurer with net carbon emissions of zero. It has yet to make a commitment to neutralise the carbon of its operations outside the UK.
