Hanson Cement faces environmental charges

The Environment Agency is charging cement manufacturer Hanson Cement with four counts of breaching the company's environmental permit conditions in Wales.

The charges relating to the Castle Cement Padeswood plant, Wales, will be heard next month.

The company has entered a guilty plea to all four of the charges.

Three other charges have been dropped.

Detailed investigations have been conducted by the agency into the cement plant’s operations from 2006 through 2007, when the company was still known as Castle Cement. The court was told that the company had failed to act on enforcement notices issued by the environmental agency.

The company has pleaded guilty to:

  • failing to maintain the plant equipment
  • breaching an enforcement notice issued by the environmental agency
  • breaching permit requirements to limit dust emissions
  • and breaching permit requirements to control excessive noise and vibration
  • Sentencing has been adjourned until November 13 with the possibility of it reaching the crown court.

Earlier this month, the plant hit the headlines when a leak caused cars in the local area to be covered in a light coating of cement dust.
