While targets were achieved for CO2 emissions and air quality, the targets for waste, water consumption and quality were not reached.

The company’s target to reduce CO2 emissions from energy consumption by 1.4% from 2009 levels was exceeded with a reduction of 3.6% to 319,768 tonnes.

There was good news on air quality as targets were again exceeded. The aim was to meet 85% APU compliance, 91% APU compliance was achieved.

Although the company’s performance on construction waste was good against the targets set, with the 96% of construction waste being recycled, a general and landscaped waste recycling target of 50% fell short by 12%.

Water consumption targets seem somewhat low in ambition with a long term mains water reduction targets not being set and baseline data unavailable.

The news was better for water quality. The company’s de-icer recovery plan was initiated and a 2011 target set for deploying de-icer recovery vehicles for 90% of operational time during winter operations for the calendar year 2011.

Heathrow has acknowledged that it needs to do more in certain areas such as waste recycling and has had challenges to its water management plans with the recent heavy winters.
