Sustainable Business Leadership in 2020: edie publishes results of flagship annual survey

The 19-page 2019 Sustainable Business Leadership Survey, developed in association with energy company Ørsted, explores the future of sustainable business and the views of those in control of sustainability within their firms. The resulting report was launched at edie’s Sustainability Leaders Forum in London on Tuesday (4 February), with an on-stage panel discussion with business leaders.

Launching the report, edie’s Insight Editor James Evison, said: “This report illustrates the positivity around the sector at present in light of the net-zero targets and the influence of inspirational figures such as Greta Thunberg and companies such as Unilever and Patagonia.

“But it is also a clarion call for boardrooms, c-suite executives and more generally companies across all sectors to scale-up their ambitions and take sustainability to the next level – delivering a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.

“With the UN’s COP26 in Glasgow this November, and the critical year of 2020 being a benchmark for delivering fresh strategies, it is more vital than ever that those who have responsibility and take leadership in sustainability grab the bull by the horns and offer transformational change.”

Key challenges and opportunities

The report is based on the findings of the extensive survey of 330 sustainability, energy and resource professionals about the various challenges, drivers and opportunities related to sustainable business leadership.

How optimistic do sustainability and energy professionals feel about the year ahead? How are business commitments developing and changing across key areas such as renewable energy, single-use plastics and social sustainability? And what are the business traits and personal skills required to turn those commitments into actions in 2020?

The report has the answers to these questions – comparing with the findings of our inaugural survey in 2019 to see how opinions have shifted in the past 12 months. Alongside the exclusive survey results, the report includes a variety of key facts and stats and pull quotes from business leaders representing all major industry sectors – which together provide an end-to-end overview of sustainable business leadership in 2020.
