The EST, which advises on reducing carbon emissions and saving money through energy bills, says that companies could cut carbon emissions by 2.4m tonnes and see their fleet mileage drop by 10% by using the system.

Mileage management systems are designed to save companies money on mileage reimbursement and cut carbon emissions. They achieve this by accurately logging the number of miles undertaken by employees for business purposes.

Heinz UK has seen its mileage claims drop by 28% and has reduced its pence per mile rate by 10% after trialling mileage management company Vertivia’s internet-based software on its 410-strong vehicle fleet.

Red Bull introduced the same system in June which it hopes will bring down its mileage and reduce its carbon by 10%.

The EST says that drivers logging company mileage are incentivised into becoming more fuel-efficient and that companies can use the technology to review the types of vehicles they have in their fleet.

The EST Fleet partnership manager, David Nicholas, said: “Mileage management systems offer a win-win scenario for companies and their staff.

“In terms of our advice for Red Bull we made a number of recommendations after conducting an in-depth review of their fleet. One of our recommendations was to implement a mileage capture system to provide both cost and carbon savings.”

Vertivia sales director, Paul Chater, said: “For employers the system can provide improved HMRC compliance and detailed data breakdowns so they can consider alternative reimbursement structures and manage their fleets more effectively. The result is a drop in fuel costs and also in carbon emissions.”
