Shanks says it is pleased to complete the sale

The Blochairn site is located to the eastern side of Glasgow and comprises a state of the art MRF and an adjacent sorting hall. The site was closed in December following the completion of the sale of Shanks' UK solid waste collection activities to Biffa.

In a statement about the Biffa deal, Shanks said the completion of the deal represents its exit from UK solid waste operations "where Shanks is sub-scale and not positioned to win"

Shanks UK Municipal Division managing director Peter Eglinton said: "We are pleased to have been able to complete the handover of this facility on time to Glasgow City Council. We can now focus the UK business on our core municipal contracts and producing fuel for our customers."

Speaking about the firm in January, chief executive Peter Dilnot said: "These transactions deliver on our strategy of focusing on markets where we have sustainable competitive advantage and can generate attractive returns. We are exiting a market where we are sub-scale and not positioned to win, and focusing our UK operations on our growing UK municipal and organics businesses.

"Shanks is well positioned for future growth, with a portfolio of strong businesses in attractive target markets. In addition to our growing UK municipal business, we are market leaders in Benelux Solid Waste, have a differentiated business in European Hazardous Waste, and an established leadership position in organics."
