Shipping containers provide office space for start-ups

A pioneering initiative to create a commercial building using old shipping containers has been completed as part of a £1.2m sustainable project in Sunderland.

Developed by contractor Clugston Construction (CC), the new office block forms part of the Sustainable Enterprise Strategies (SES) initiative, which aims to facilitate business growth and employment in the north-east.

As part of the project, 37 used shipping containers were adapted and reconditioned to create a three-storey complex in 24 weeks. The new offices will now be offered to new businesses as start-up accommodation.

SES director Mark Heskett Saddington said that the construction method was selected as it provided a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

He said: “We chose his unusual method of construction because it’s sustainable and appropriate, SES is committed to the principle of reduce, re-use and recycle and of course Sunderland has a long association with shipping. It’s also a relatively quick and low cost construction method.”

CC north-east regional manager Steve Waggett, added: “Not only is it an innovative use of freight containers that may have otherwise been scrapped or left unused, but it is a sustainable project that will benefit the local community in the long term.”
