First eco home insurance launched

High street chain Marks and Spencer is claiming a UK first by offering insurance aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly products.

The chain, famed for its underwear, has this week announced its M&S home insurance will no w encourage policy holders to replace broken or stolen items with A rate energy efficiency ones.

‘Sustainable reinstatement of kitchen appliances’ as M&S has branded it will mean when a customer makes a claim for a fridge freezer, refrigerator, washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, they will be offered a replacement which is A rated for energy-efficiency.

M&S believes this sort of replacement of electrical kitchen appliances could potentially save up to 140KG of CO2 each year2.

Its deal, offered through AXA Insurance, will also offer the opportunity to rebuild a home, if needed, through a ‘sustainable total rebuild.’

M&S head of insurance, David Wells, said: “These new policy features, which we believe are firsts in the UK insurance market, mean the M&S Home Insurance policy is one of the most environmentally friendly products of its kind.”
