A laboratory which tests soil samples from contaminated sites, measures water and air quality and monitors radiation levels is to shed more than 20 staff in Glasgow.
The council-owned Colston Laboratory, which employees some 80 scientists, is to offer all staff voluntary redundancy packages, though Glasgow County Council insists there will be no compulsory redundancies.
The laboratory carries out a wide variety of environmental testing for local authorities across the west of Scotland.
It also does some work for the private sector and Government agencies.
The council points to a fall in demands for its services as the reason for the cut backs.
