The new tunnel, located close to the Eastlink Toll Bridge, will transfer wastewater from the north Docklands area to the new wastewater treatment works in Ringsend. It will also carry district heating pipes, gas mains, electrical and telecommunications cables.
“The new tunnel is part of an overall plan to radically overhaul watermains and drainage infrastructure in the Docklands area,” Mr Ahern said. “The Dublin Docklands Water and Drainage scheme will provide water and sewerage services for 4,915 housing units and 560,000sq. metres of commercial development in the Docklands area. This infusion of new housing and business will greatly boost the revitalisation of this area of the city.”
The scheme is being funded by the Water Services Investment Programme 2004 – 2006 as a serviced Land Initiative project to boost housing provision.
The Minister added that he would be urging the Council to press ahead with this as quickly as possible.
