A two day conference held in the city, entitled Strategies and Actions for Flood Emergency Risk Management, heard that Dublin City Council had joined a new European initiative to implement flood risk measures, according to the Sunday Business Post.

Initiatives in the Euro 20m, five-year project include flood defence schemes, an early-warning system for future flooding and increased partnerships with state bodies and other organisations for flood emergency management.

Tom Leahy, deputy city engineer with the Dublin city council was reported describing how the city could be subjected to monsoon-like rainfall that would overwhelm drainage systems.

“This type of rainfall and the frequency of small storms in Dublin are increasing,” he added.

Current flood defences that are under construction include a Euro 5.5m sea-lock at Spencer Dock and a Euro 500,000 temporary flood gate to provide full protection for the East Wall area.
