The draft code of practice, open for consultation, aims to help local authority environment officers to monitor, assess and resolve complaints on offensive smells; offer guidance on minimising odour; and inform possible changes to codes of practice.

Environment Minister Ross Finnie said: “The Executive recognises that odour from waste water treatment works is a significant issue to a number of communities throughout Scotland. We must recognise that there is no such thing as an odour free treatment works, and that the resolution of problems is neither swift nor cost free.”

“This draft code of practice has been drawn up to guide all those working in the industry and/or affected by it to ensure that odour nuisance is minimised amicably and effectively.”

The Executive is welcoming written responses to the consultation until January 7th 2005. Responses should either be addressed to Duncan McNab at the Scottish Executive Environment Group, or emailed to Duncan.Mcnab@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
