Hogan unveils discount for early septic tank registration

Ireland's minister for environment, community and local government Phil Hogan has unveiled plans for the septic tank registration fee to be reduced to ‚¬5 for the first three months - when it will increase tenfold.

Speaking at a public meeting on the Water Services Amendment Act 2012 in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary yesterday (February 6) Mr Hogan set out proposals to offer a discounted registration and inspection of septic tanks during the first quarter of the new legislation.

According to Mr Hogan, the discount is being offered by the Government to act as an incentive in a bid to encourage owners to register early.

As a result, the lower fee will be available to businesses and households which register before June 30 2012. The final septic tank registration deadline is set for March 2013 when owners will be required to pay €50 to register.

He said: “This legislation has been deliberately framed to minimise the impact on householders who can be assured that if their systems are working properly and are being maintained the impact of the new system will be minor.

The guidelines are set to be formally announced by the Government following consultation with the Environment Protection Agency and European Commission in two weeks time. A four-week public consultation will then commence.

Mr Hogan added: “Septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems must be operational and maintained and the guidelines will outline some very simple and obvious examples of risks of a deficient treatment system.”
