Hundredth member joins pre-WEEE scheme

Valpak has signed up the 100th member of its pre-compliance service for the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

Smiths Group has become the latest to join the WEEE pre-compliance scheme, now the largest in the UK, and will now sit alongside participants including Tesco, Virgin Mobile and Lec Refrigeration.

The service includes an online calculator to help members work out the potential cost of the Directive to their business, as well as the latest information on the progress of implementing it into UK law.

"The implementation of the WEEE Directive is complex, but joining this scheme will help us in our preparations for the forthcoming regulations - from determining the true scope of the regulations across our diverse product range, through to developing our data collection systems and arrangements for the national collection, recovery and recycling of WEEE," spokesman for the Smiths Group, Jonathan Garrett commented.

He said that being able to access in-depth information on these issues was crucial to all companies being affected by the forthcoming regulations being passed into law in the UK.

"Although the DTI has recently clarified many points regarding the implementation of the WEEE Directive, there are still many issues which need to be resolved before it can work within the UK," added Michael Sadler, head of Valpak's WEEE pre-compliance scheme.

"Members of the scheme will have the reassurance that they will have the most current, expert information and advice on helping them to plan."
