Marley Drainage and Plumbing provides drainage for sports park
Drainage and plumbing company Marley has provided a 250 acre sporting venue in Essex with a stormwater drainage system to help reduce the risk of flooding.
As part of the works to construct the Basildon Sporting Village, a water attenuation system was needed under the outdoor football and hockey pitches, as a result of the large number of facilities, including astro-turf pitches, a 50m swimming pool, sports hall, athletics track and gymnasium, on the site.
According to main contractors Morgan Sindall and subcontractors White Horse Contractors, the flood risk was increased as the site combined an existing pitch, new pitch and stadium.
As a result, Marley was appointed to install 650m3 of its Waterloc250 storage cells beneath the six astro-turf pitches to deal with stormwater run-off. Marley's units were considered the most suitable system for the job as 96% of the cell volume can store water, helping to minimise the plan area or depth needed for the installation.
White Horse Contractors project manager Nick Coleman, said: "This product was ideal for the job because it has the capacity to store water, and let it go back into the system at a slower rate, significantly reducing the amount of water that is being released at any time. It was also cost effective and showed best value."
