Scottish Water ramps up efficiency message

Scottish Water has launched three new water efficiency videos on its website which aim to raise awareness of household water efficiency.

Advice includes taking less time in the shower and using a bucket and sponge to wash a car rather than a hose.

Scottish Water’s development planning manager Keith Phillips said that the videos were just one of the many initiatives the company were undertaking to make Scotland more water efficient. He pointed to a water usage calculator available on their website as another example of the company’s efficiency efforts.

The water company, which owns 47,500 km of water pipes, has also reduced the amount of water it loses through leakage. Since 2002 it has cut leaks by 44% and in the last year it has saved 70m litres of water a day.

The water company is trialling ways to measure water efficiency in social housing properties. Five housing associations have signed up to participate in the trial, giving the company 400 houses to monitor.

Phillips said: “We will be installing metres in the homes to measure the water consumption over three years. The first year will be used to collect base line data.

Then at the beginning of year two we will proceed with either retrofitting water efficient devices instigating a targeted communication programme on the best way to be more water efficient in the home or both. The meters are currently being installed with a view to the start of the year one being late August/early September.”
