The partnership involves supply and maintenance of 52 Volvo recycling vehicles, a mix of hookloaders, refuse collection vehicles and skip loaders.

It includes a hybrid refuse truck, which can operate on both diesel and electric, as well as biofuel.

The order effectively will upgrade Bywaters’ fleet to Euro-5 emissions standards. Customers will benefit from quieter operation and reduced emissions as a result.

Bywaters, based in east London, operates two Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) processing recyclables, residual and construction materials. The MRFs have a combined capacity of 1,500,000 tonnes a year.

Bywaters’ strategic development manager, David Rumble, said: “Our materials recovery rate for recycling is 98%. The efficiencies generated by the new Volvo fleet should help increase our tonnage throughput and our overall recovery rate.”
