Earth Overshoot Day has been marked since the 1970s and is held to mark the calendar date at which humanity will have used up nature’s resource budget for the entire year. Its observance is overseen by the Global Footprint Network.

This year’s Earth Overshoot Day will be the joint earliest yet, tied with 2019. This proves that the reduction in global resource use recorded in 2020, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, has not yet been baked-in, with a cocktail of poor policy support and insufficient actions from businesses leading to a year-on-year rebound in overconsumption.

With this in mind, the webinar explored how businesses can collaborate, innovate and actuate to achieve one-planet compatible business models – even as we continue to face the economic and social fallout of Covid-19.

Discussion points included coupling the net-zero transition and Covid-19 recovery with the transition to a circular, one-planet economy; innovating business models, investments and engagement pathways and spotlighting real-life examples of collaborating for the circular economy in action.

Speakers for the session were:

Wayne Hubbard, the chief executive at ReLondon, previously known as London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB), where he champions the organisation’s mission to “revolutionise our relationship with stuff” and leads the delivery of ReLondon’s business plan. Hubbard is a trustee of the CIWM (Chartered Institution of Wastes Management), the sector’s professional body.

Kresse Wesling founded luxury fashion accessory brand Elvis & Kresse in 2005 after a meeting with the London Fire Brigade, during which she learned about the scale of fire-hose waste in the UK. The Kent-based brand transforms decommissioned fire hoses into products such as handbags and belts and, over its lifetime, has grown to repurpose another 11 waste streams. It is a certified B-Corp and Social Enterprise with charitable partnerships including the Fire Fighters Charity.

Centrica Business Solution’s net-zero product manager Alex Lowe. Lowe is a specialist in decarbonisation strategy for the B2B market. He leads the delivery of Net-Zero Energy Pathway projects for Centrica Business Solutions’ clients across the industrial, commercial and public sectors. His main area of expertise is making the commercial case for organisations to implement high-integrity decarbonisation to realise the opportunities of clean energy and to de-risk exposure to climate change risks.

edie’s senior reporter Sarah George was the chair for this webinar.
