Europe sets biofuel goal

News in Brief

The EU is to bring the share of biofuels in road transport up to 10% by 2020, member states' energy ministers agreed this week.

The ministers are yet to decide whether to make the target of sourcing 20% of Europe's energy from renewables by 2020 a binding goal, having failed to reach a decision at the Brussels meeting.

While overall they backed the target, ministers differed on how much individual states should contribute to achieving emission cuts.

Both the biofuels and renewbales targets are part of Europe's energy strategy, proposed in January.

The energy package will be discussed at a March EU summit in Brussels.
