Gormley: 'Find your carbon number'

A website is allowing people across Ireland to calculate their carbon footprint.

Speaking at the launch, Environment Minister John Gormley said that everybody had a role to play in tackling climate change.

Mr Gormley said: "Finding your carbon count number is only the first step.

"The big commitment that we want people to make is to reduce and to manage their carbon emissions so that together we can reduce Ireland's carbon emissions and tackle climate change."

On the new website, the Carbon Calculator takes account of energy used in the home together with travel patterns and providing advice on how people can reduce their carbon count number.

The calculator was developed as part of the Change scheme, which is a government initiative to raise awareness about climate change across Ireland.

During April, market research conducted by Behaviour and Attitudes on behalf of the Change campaign found that 82% of people are concerned about the impact of climate change on Ireland.

Seminars have been held across Ireland for people in the public sector, business, educations, tourism and agriculture and will be available online from the May 7.
