Following the outbreak of the fire back in February, the Irish Environmental Protection Agency ordered that the Kerdiffstown site be shut down and completely overhauled.

Since then 24 gas abstraction wells have been installed at the site. The next steps will see a plastic membrane placed in the area of the lined cell, and a clay cover in the north west region of the site.

Once the gas control layers are in place, gas will be pumped from the gas abstraction wells to two fully covered gas flare units on site. The units will burn off the landfill gas at a high temperature, destroying the compounds responsible for the odour issues.

The EPA says it will strive to minimise the impact of any odorous gas generated during the remediation process.
