Pupils brought the unwanted letters to build a seven foot tree highlighting the amount of paper wasted.

The youngsters from year five of St Joseph’s primary school, in Covent Garden, built the life-sized tree made out of the junk mail they and their families had collected.

The project was overseen by local artist, Andrew Dwyer, who also talked to the whole school about why environmental issues, and reducing and recycling waste in particular, is so important.

School girl Paris Williams, aged 10, took part in the build, she said: “It was a fun project and I learnt about all the trees that get cut down to make junk mail, and that we can stop junk mail coming to our house.”

The junk mail tree will be on display at Swiss Cottage library throughout the summer holidays.
