Within two years, Killala Community Wind farm could be generating 23 mega watts of energy to the national grid, the Mayo News reported.

It is expected that the project will cost in the region of Euro 25m and will consist of ten turbines.

Shareholders in the wind farm include local farmers and Killala Community Council. It’s director, John Gilvarry, told the paper that everyone involved was very happy that the project was given the go ahead.

“We can now move forward with our investment vehicle to sell this project to the wider community,” he explained.

“This not only means that profits will stay in the county, but also a community group will be capturing a natural resource, generating electricity and reducing carbon emissions equivalent to 15,000 cars being taken off the road.”

Recently, the National Offshore Wind Association of Ireland said that the government needed to do more to promote wind farms in the country.
