Carbon Trust flags up energy savings made by public sector

In a week where Government cut backs have dominated the headlines, the Carbon Trust has pointed to different kinds of cuts being made by publicly-funded organisations.

Since 2001, says the trust, it has worked with a huge range of public sector organisations from hospitals and schools to fire and police stations, from central government departments to local authority offices.

Over the past nine years, the 3,000 plus public organizations to have worked with the trust have made combined savings of over £650m with resulting CO2 emissions reductions of 6.5 million tones.

The trust says it can continue to make even greater savings for the environment and the public purse, pointing to further projects already identified that could save £3bn and 34 million tones of CO2.

Richard Rugg, Head of Public Sector at the Carbon Trust, said:

“The UK public sector has shown impressive leadership in recent years in tackling carbon emissions and bringing down energy use.

“It is especially encouraging to see that, along with greater levels of knowledge and skills, we are also seeing a steady increase in ambition.

“A few years ago, organisations graduating from our public sector carbon management programmes aimed, on average, to cut their carbon emissions by 12% over five years, now they are aiming for 30%.”
