CHP, which convert a single fuel into both electricity and heat in one process, has become a well-proven technology across the world and is now recognised as a viable alternative to centralised energy generation – more than 2,000 factories and businesses across the UK have so far implemented CHP technology on their sites.

The guide concludes with an industry viewpoint from Ian Hopkins, sales director at Centrica Business Solutions, who highlights the growing benefits of CHP systems for businesses across the UK.

Hopkins writes: “The widening price gap between wholesale gas and electricity is increasing the economic viability of CHP because businesses can offset higher, unpredictable power prices by using cheaper natural gas input fuel to generate their own lower cost, low-carbon electricity.

“There’s also the added bonus of cheap heat or cooling, plus the potential to earn an income from demand-response.”
