German football team tops league with largest PV array

The German Bundesliga football league's largest solar photovoltaic (PV) plant has been installed next to the Wirsol-Rhein-Neckar arena in Sinsheim.

"In fewer than eight weeks of construction, more than 450 parking spaces were equipped with energy producers"

Wind and solar company Wircon was commissioned by the Turn-und Sportgemeinschaft (TSG) 1899 Hoffenheim football club to build the 10,000sq m 1MW carport PV system which consists of 4,025 solar panels. The plant provides about two thirds of the power needed by the arena.

Wircon chief executive Dr. Peter Vest said: "In fewer than eight weeks of construction, more than 450 parking spaces were equipped with energy producers."

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has fitted two other PV plants - one on the roof of the TSG 'Fanhaus' fan shop and one measuring 230sq m at its training and business facilities in Zuzenhausen.

The new installations mean that the Bundesliga league will henceforth provide approximately 1.3m kWh of electricity per year from renewable energy.
