The facility, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2014, has the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power 56,000 U.S. homes.

Called Panhandle 2, the wind farm is Google’s 15th renewable energy investment and its second in Texas.

Last year, Google announced an approximately $200m investment in the Spinning Spur wind farm – a 161 MW wind farm in west Texas that generates enough energy to power more than 60,000 average US homes.

In addition to these two projects, the company is also buying a Texas wind from the Happy Hereford wind farm as part of its goal of operating on 100% renewable energy.

The tech giant also recently announced an $80m (£50m) investment in six utility-scale solar facilities in California and Arizona.

With a combined capacity of 106MW, the six-project portfolio is expected to be operational by early 2014 and will generate enough electricity to power more than 17,000 US homes.

Meanwhile, Google announced yesterday that it is buying smart thermostats company Nest Labs for $3.2bn, a deal that aims to accelerate Google’s position in the energy efficient homes market.
