Investigation into hacked emails underway

An investigation into allegations in hacked emails appearing to show scientists destroying data against climate change has got underway.

The University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit’s (CRU) will be subject to a ‘full independent’ investigation according to the institution.

The review will be carried out by Sir Muir Russell, a former civil servant and chair of the Scottish Judicial Appointments Board, and is expected to announce its finding in spring this year.

The university’s pro-vice-chancellor for research, enterprise and engagement, professor Trevor Davies, announced the move yesterday (February 12).

He said: “Published papers from CRU have gone through the rigorous and intensive peer review process which is the keystone for maintaining the integrity of scientific research

“That process and the findings of our researchers have been the subject of significant debate in recent months.

“Colleagues in CRU have strenuously defended their conduct and the published work and we believe it is in the interests of all concerned that there should be an additional assessment considering the science itself.”
