9 in 10 sustainability professionals excited by green recovery opportunities, survey reveals

EXCLUSIVE: An edie survey of more than 240 sustainability, energy and CSR professionals has revealed that 89% believe the implementation of Covid-19 recovery plans is an opportunity to accelerate climate action.

Of the 244 respondents to the survey, which ran online during August, more than half (54%) "strongly agreed" that creating an economic recovery from the pandemic presents an opportunity to increase green ambitions and accelerate actions at an unprecedented pace. A further 35% "agreed" with this sentiment.

This was in spite of the fact that three-quarters of the respondents, who were mainly UK-based, do not believe that the Government’s response to the pandemic could be considered “green”. The Treasury has faced particular criticism for not scaling back the £27.4bn roads plan announced at the 2020 Budget, and for providing unconditional, billion-pound bailouts to high-emitting corporates.

The survey was conducted as part of edie’s Mission Possible: Green Recovery campaign, launched today (2 September) in association with edie's headline green recovery partner Centrica Business Solutions. The aim of the campaign is to support professionals on the collective mission to drive a green recovery across all major industries, through bespoke editorial content, digital events and sector-specific insight reports.

Promisingly, the survey revealed that more than half (55%) of the organisations represented have already made a commitment to contribute to the green recovery – by, for example, advising policymakers, joining a collaborative initiative or implementing new standalone commitments, initiatives or processes. A further 13% are planning to take such action in the coming months.

A more in-depth analysis of the survey results can be found in our 'In Charts' piece.
