VIDEO – How Expo 2020 Dubai is redefining sustainable mega-events

EXCLUSIVE: edie has been given unrivalled access to Expo 2020 in Dubai, which is hosting Global Goals Week (15-22 January 2022). Against a backdrop of giant solar energy trees, we kick off with a chat with the Expo's director of sustainability operations, Dina Storey.

Spanning 4.38 sq.km, Expo 2020 Dubai is the 35th World Expo event to be hosted over the past 170 years. Delayed by Covid-19, the Expo is being hosted in Dubai from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

The Expo is a global gathering to share ideas, showcase innovation and encourage collaboration among 192 participating countries. Under the theme “connecting minds, creating the future”, it has a strong sustainability and climate focus, centred around a state-of-the-art Sustainability Pavilion which has been built to the highest possible standards of sustainable architecture.

For the first time in its history, Global Goals Week has left the UN General Assembly to be hosted at Expo 2020 in Dubai – and edie is on the ground to report on the action. We begin with a conversation with Dina Storey who heads up sustainability operations for the Expo 2020 Dubai site.

Speaking in front of the Sustainability Pavilion’s 130-metre wide canopy and 18 energy trees which together help generate 4GWh of renewable energy per year, Storey explains how Expo 2020 Dubai is setting a new standard for sustainable global events, and the work she and her team are doing to ensure a positive climate legacy from this mega-event.

Global Goals at the Sustainability Leaders Forum 2022

The Sustainable Development Goals are a running theme of edie’s flagship event of the year, the multi-award-winning Sustainability Leaders Forum.

Taking place live in London on 8–9 March 2022, the event will re-unite business leaders, sustainability practitioners, policymakers, investors and NGOs around a common goal: to turn the ambitions of COP26 into meaningful climate actions and to truly transform business, for good.
