ODPM launches regeneration and housing review

The Government has launched a review of the way regeneration and housing are funded to further its aim of creating "sustainable communities".

The review of Housing and Regeneration will look at how private money, public land and assets can be most effectively used for regeneration, building new houses and improving existing ones. A group of experts will consider the creation of new Government agencies to bring more private investment and support sustainable developments.

The expert panel, which includes officials from national regeneration agency English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation, will also examine how a new agency could give a “more strategic role” to local authorities in delivering sustainable communities.

Local Government and Communities Minister David Miliband said the review should “further strengthen Government’s ability to deliver strong, decent and sustainable communities for all.”

Margaret Ford, chairman of English Partnerships, said: “We welcome this review of improving the way we deliver housing and renewal across England.”

“Our expertise lies in bringing forward innovative ways that balance economic, social, environmental and infrastructure needs while levering in significant levels of private finance to maximise the public investment. We believe this review will recognise and capitalise on our proven strengths.”

The ODPM will be receiving responses to questions posed in the review until May 19, with the results due to be reported to ministers this summer.
