New homes to replace derelict mental hospital

A village of 420 homes and a primary school are to replace a derelict mental hospital in Colchester as part of the Government's efforts to regenerate Britain's disused NHS properties.

The 9.7 ha site forms part of a total of 1,600 ha of land that the NHS transferred to the then ODPM in April 2005, opening the way for up to 14,000 new homes, said the Government’s brownfield regeneration agency, English Partnerships.

The agency is now looking for a developer for the Colchester site, which is to be called Turner Village. It hopes that the development will provide “affordable” homes to Colchester – a quarter of the homes planned for Turner Village are to let out, or sold under a shared equity scheme.

Mike Goulding, senior regeneration manager for English Partnerships, said: “Turner Village is one of almost 100 redundant hospital sites across the country that English Partnerships is bringing back into productive use as part of our Hospital Sites Programme.

“Its redevelopment will help boost the number of homes, particularly affordable ones, in this part of Essex.

“We are seeking a developer to work with us to create high quality homes that will benefit the local community,” he said.
