Ikea is selling prefabricated homes from its Gateshead store, designed to use minimal resources in their construction and to be highly energy efficient.

If the interest is there, 117 of the open-plan properties will be erected on a site near the town’s international stadium.

Each home will cost £70,000 and will only be available to households with an income of £15,000 to £30,000.

Plans are afoot to duplicate the scheme in Edinburgh, Brighton and the New Forest.
