A Green Party politician has been elected to the Northern Irish Assembly.

Dr Brian Wilson will represent North Down after campaigning on an environmental and anti-nuclear platform.

While his election has been celebrated as a sign of things to come across the rest of the British Isles by the Greens, it is worth remembering that the high number of political factions in Northern Ireland give parties with a small share of the vote a better chance of election than on the mainland where politics landscape is dominated large parties.

Dr Wilson received 9.2% of the vote.
