AES wins cement works monitoring contract

Air monitoring specialist AES (Analytical Environmental Services) recently clinched a new contract worth nearly £500,000 over three years with Castle Cement, one of the UK's largest cement manufacturers to monitor are emissions from the company's three manufacturing sites, at Ribblesdale in Lancashire, Padeswood in North Wales and Ketton in Rutland.

The cement manufacturer employees over 1,200 people nationally and sells more

than three million tonnes of cement a year. Castle Cement has a strict environmental

policy in place to ensure that fine dust and gases from the production process

comply with Environment Agency regulations.

Ian Walpole, Castle’s Environment Manager, said: “We are committed to

caring for the environment by including environmental considerations in business

decisions made at all levels of the company.”

AES has also extended its wide range of sampling and analysis services with

the announcement of a new ambient air and noise monitoring service. The company

is investing £250,000 in specialist equipment and recruitment and launched

the service from the beginning of this month, targeted at local authorities,

industry and consultants.

Services already provided by AES include a wide range of UKAS accredited inorganic

and organic chemical analysis for contaminated land, water and air samples.

Other services include its specialist dioxin and furan analysis, legionella

risk assessments and effluent treatment evaluations.

The company already offers a comprehensive air monitoring service which measures

stack emissions for a range of customers, including municipal incinerators and

industrial sites, however the new service will measure air quality in the wider

environment.

Expanding services

The move comes as AES looks to expand its range of services to meet the increasing

demand from both local authorities and industries which are required to comply

with European air quality legislation such as IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention

& Control) regulations.

John Allen, Laboratory Director at AES, said: “We expect demand for the

new service to be greatest from local authorities who have to comply with the

UK Air Quality Strategy, as well as from the landfill and waste management business,

environmental consultants and government agencies.”
