Tony Killeen, the Junior Environment and Energy Minister, will launch Ireland’s first Regional Climate Change Strategy at the next conference of the Mid West Regional Authority (MWRA).

MWRA director Liam Conneally said the move was “in response to international concern about climate change”, and that the mid-west region is well-placed to exploit wind power, wave power and other forms of renewable energy.

“Much is already being done to establish the Mid West as a centre of excellence for the development and delivery of renewable energy technologies, and energy efficient buildings,” he said.

“The future development of this region as a region of excellence and expertise in the energy area will bring opportunities for communities, entrepreneurs and third level graduates.”

Separately, the government in Ireland has introduced more tax incentives designed to encourage businesses to conserve more energy. Details were announced in the recent Finance Bill.
