Seagate Technology in Limavady told the court that it needed to seek “instruction from America” about whether the firm will contest the charges, the local Derry Journal reported.

The company has been accused of discharging a poisonous, noxious or polluting matter into a waterway last year. In addition, authorities have said that the company released trade effluent into the sewers or sewage treatment works of the Department of Regional Development without prior agreement.

As a result, the Department of the Environment’s (DOE) water management section opted to bring charges against the company.

However, a solicitor for the DOE reportedly told the court that Seagate Technology’s legal team was based in the US. As a result, she asked that the case be postponed while the firm decided whether it would contest the charges.

Last week, the Northern Ireland Water Company was fined for releasing pollutants into a local river.
