Private waste firm gets into central Dublin

Private waste collection firm Panda will begin operation in central Dublin next month, despite city council attempts to prevent it.

The refusal by the High Court to grant an injunction to stop the waste firm from operating in the city centre has opened the doors to competition in the area.

The city council wanted to ban private companies from waste collection preferring instead to put the service out to tender and chose a successful bidder.

But the injunction failed, and Panda Waste of Co Meath said its services would be 20% cheaper than council collections.

Panda, which already operates in Fingal and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, will start collecting in central Dublin starting on September 1.

The firm said it would charge an annual fee of Euro 72.80, instead of the Euro 91 the council charges.

It also announced new customers wouldn’t face an annual service charge for the rest of 2008 and promised to freeze prices until 2010.

Meanwhile Dublin householders have been reminded that they have two weeks to pay a new recycling charge or face not having their bins collected.

According to the Herald, tens of thousands of homes in Fingal received final notices demanding Euro 60 for the recycling service, which was originally provided free of charge.
