Irish firm to speed wave energy technology to market

Irish technology commercialisation and investment company Technology or Ideas (TfI) is to team up with DuPont to develop technology for the wave energy industry.

The collaboration is designed to speed up the commercialisation of TfI’s WaveProtector technology, which increases the survivability and maintainability of wave devices while reducing the cost of generating electricity.

Originally invented by the National University of Ireland, Galway, the passive protection technology is based on the application of tailored, non-linear materials to wave energy devices.

Once applied, the materials reduce the force the devices are subjected to while maximising their energy capture.

As part of the collaboration, TfI will be granted access to DuPonts range of materials.

Dan Richardson, TfI’s managing director, said: “DuPont’s depth of expertise in cutting edge material science and lessons learnt from other sectors means that we can utilize the best material solutions for our WaveProtector customers.

“Our technology can bring substantial enhancements in cost and performance to wave energy device manufacturers.”
