Venice is suffering the worst flooding it has seen for three decades.

As might be expected, the Italian lagoon city regularly suffers flooding with problems reported 200 days a year on average.

What has been unusual about this week’s floods, however, is the extent and severity, with waters over 1.5m higher than usual.

An underwater dam designed to protect the city from flooding is expected to be completed in 2011.
