Wind turbines ‘cost effective’ renewable energy source

Irish firms which are using wind turbines to create energy are potentially using one of the most cost effective ways of developing renewable energy, it has been stated.

Andrew Moore, managing director of British Eco Energy, believes that wind turbines are a useful way of creating energy as they can be used 24 hours a day.

However, he added that they are only a productive energy source if they are situated in areas with good wind speed.

He explained: “If you’ve got a very good wind-speed, wind turbines can actually be one of the most cost-effective renewable energy solutions.

“The main advantage with them is that they work at night as well as the daytime and actually produce probably more energy during the winter when we need more energy than during the summer. They’re working all the time, rather than just working during the summer.”

A consortium has recently reached a finance package to enable the construction of a standalone wind energy site in County Cork.
