IFAT moves to a two-year cycle

The statistics for IFAT 2008 speak for themselves: 2,560 exhibitors - that's a rise of 15 percent; around 120,000 visitors - a rise of 10 percent; and trade visitors from abroad now make up one third of the total.

The International Trade Fair for Water -Sewage – Refuse – Recycling is a key
forum for companies that offer environmental technologies and services for
the domestic markets and the export markets. Now, in order to meet the
growing environmental market and the wishes of industry for a further
expansion in the leading international position of IFAT, the event will be
moving from a three-year cycle to a two-year cycle. The next IFAT will now
not be taking place in spring 2011, but earlier, from 13 to 17 September in
2010 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. From 2012 onwards, IFAT will be
returning to its spring slot. The 2012 dates have already been fixed – they are
7 to 11 May 2012. From then onwards, IFAT will be taking place regularly
every two years in spring. By holding IFAT 2010 in autumn – the only IFAT
that is taking place at that time of year – and by returning to the spring dates
for IFAT 2012, Messe München is ensuring the cycle is adapted gradually,
from initially two-and-ahalf years, then to one-and-a-half years, and a new
regular two-year cycle from 2012. With the longer period at the beginning and
the shorter period at the end of the switch-over phase to a two-year cycle, we
are helping the industry adapt to the change. Ahead of the decision, Messe
München consulted closely with all the associations that are conceptual
sponsors of IFAT about the plans and received approval from all of them.
Many exhibitors, too, are in favour of the shortened cycle, because of the
accelerating demand for information, and as a result, investment in the
environmental sector. Above all the exhibitors and visitors from outside
Germany find the three-year cycle too long, also because of the time spans
for subsidised projects, which often run over a period of only two to three
years. With this new, shorter cycle, IFAT can now cater much better to the
needs of such projects.

Connecting Global Competence

By making this change, Messe München is expanding the status of IFAT
as a leading trade fair for environmental technologies and services. Against a
background of an ever growing number of environmental events around the
world, IFAT offers the sector orientation and the opportunity to focus their
marketing activities at a leading international environmental trade fair. A key
contributor to the quality of IFAT are also the activities of the environmental
ministries and their specialist authorities. Their programmes, for example to
support companies’ exports of technology and services, can now also be
stepped up, as a result of the new shorter cycle for the fair. The same is true
of the activities of associations, universities and research institutions, whose
projects and research findings can now be presented and communicated
more quickly after completion, thus enhancing the attractiveness of IFAT to
trade visitors. For your information, we have put together a list of questions
and answers about the change in the cycle of the fair (see enclosed). In mid
March 2009 Messe München will be sending out the exhibitors documentation
and application forms. At the same time, applications will start online, at: www.ifat.de/application. Should you have any further
questions about the new cycle, we would be happy to help. You can reach us
