Govt model for better farming introduced

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, has launched a new initiative in a bid to improve profitability for Ireland's farmers.

Animal Health Ireland is the result of group talks among the country’s primary producers, food processors and service providers to enhance the quality of the Irish agri-food industry.

Mr Smith said: “Animal health and food safety will be critical contributors to international competitiveness both as a result of the impact – perceived or otherwise – of animal diseases on product quality and safety and also because of the special importance that animal health and food safety have in international trade.

“And of course, high animal health is a major contributor to optimal efficiency and profitability at farm level.”

The Minister has called on stakeholders to work together towards this government-led industry model.

Last month, Mr Smith welcomed the reintroduction of export refunds on dairy produce agreed in Brussels.
