Kilkenny ‘needs compost disposal plant’

The rollout of a new environmental collection policy in Kilkenny is being delayed because a suitable compostable waste processing plant has yet to be found.

Kilkenny county council is keen to introduce a three-bin collection system that will allow households to dispose of both their recycling and compostable waste separately.

Yet according to the Kilkenny People, plans are being held up by the lack of a suitable place to dispose of the waste.

Speaking to the newspaper, senior council engineer Simon Walton explained action is being taken.

He said: “There are ongoing discussions between the Department of the Environment and the Department of Agriculture on the standards that would render that product suitable to go to the land rather than as landfill cover.”

Kilkenny county council recently held its Farm Environmental Awards, which recognised the efforts of local farmers in preserving the local environment.

It is hoped that the competition encourages Kilkenny’s 3,000 farmers to adopt better environmental practices, such as undertaking good waste and water management systems.
