Election candidate Tony O’Donnel was commenting on the worrying rise in illegal waste dumping in the county.

Speaking to the Leinster Leader, the Fine Gael representative said: “There has always been a certain amount of dumping on the roads approaching Kildare town.

“Illegal dumping of any kind is a disgrace, but we are now seeing public spaces within the town itself being abused.”

It comes after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its National Waste Report 2007.

The report made diverting food waste from landfill sites one of the main priorities in 2008.

Laura Burke, director of the EPA, said: “Urgent and short-term actions are required in 2009 to tackle the generation and recycling of food waste from households and businesses if we are to meet the 2010 target for diverting an additional half a million tonnes of this waste from landfill.”
