On Monday, April 13 Northern Ireland Water issued a notice affecting Greater Belfast and parts of Counties Down and Antrim telling residents to boil water before using it for cooking or drinking.

The water company did not go into detail over the nature of the potential contamination but said the advice had been issued as a precautionary measure after staff had flagged up a possible problem after ‘one of thousands’ of routine checks at a water treatment plant.

The specific affected areas are Belfast, Broughshane, Carnlough, Carryduff, Castlereagh, Crumlin, Dundonald, Dunmurry, Glenarm, Glenavy, Holywood, Kells, Newtownabbey, Randalstown, Templepatrick and Toomebridge.

The company told press it would continue to carry out tests until it was sure the possible problem was resolved and would keep customers informed of developments.

Those with concerns can contact Waterline on 08457 440088 for current information.
